SO many artists make beautiful pictures of babies in baskets. I would say I was getting there, but it never felt natural.
I decided to move towards "Free Range" or Unposed Newborn Photography aka. Lifestyle Family Photography because I was tired of lugging gear into family's homes, battling a giant reflector or figuring out props. I have always leaned toward the documentary/lifestyle style photography in the other avenues of my artmaking I don't know why this was different. I think I had expectations of what my client would want in terms of newborn photography, but in reality, the babies in baskets were not necessarily it for me or them.
Unposed babies in natural light with Mom and Dad are where it is at for me as an artist. Lifestyle photography straddles the stiff portraiture and full documentary style. Mom and Dad's love and awe for baby is so important to document and working in this style gives me room to work with them to get the poses and the authentic candids that they love.
Even looking back on the few sessions I did "pose" they were still loose and natural. I never figured out how to propperly wrap a baby in a swaddle like a burrito.
