What to Wear to Your Fall Family Photos

Michigan Fall Family Photos

“Kate, our session is coming up, and I have no idea what we’ll wear.”  Don’t woory, I gotcha!  The best part is, finding what to wear for your family does not, I repeat, DOES NOT have to be complicated!  As a photographer and a mom, I know what it’s like to be in a panicked frenzy days before your session, trying to get clothes for everyone.  Now I follow these few tips to help me prepare for my personal session!  Check em out and see how they will work for you!

Where to Start

When deciding what to wear, my advice is always the same.  Start at the end.  Where will these photos be going?  If they will mostly be displayed in your living room, use that color palette to inspire your clothing.  You can also use the location of your upcoming session to determine what colors will be used.  Let me tell ya, fall has so many beautiful colors, any of which would be great options for you to wear!

As far as people, this is up to you.  If you have someone that has a clothing sensitivity, start with them.  Giving them at least a month to get used to their new outfit.  If you are the hardest to dress, then start with yourself. You, more than anyone, know the dynamics of your family.  Trust your instincts, and start there.  If you need an extra set of eyes on your choices before your session, don’t hesitate to email me a photo, and we can chat about it.

Coordinate over Match

I know how easy it is to put everyone in a pair of jeans and a white or black shirt and call it a day. However, from the depths of my soul, I am begging you to please, pretty please, pretty please with sugar on top, DO. NOT. DO. THIS.

This takes every ounce of personality out of your session and puts you right back into that Sears studio session that we all cringe at.  Instead of everyone matching, coordinate.  Choose a color palette (jewel tones, fall colors, or earth tones) and select clothes from that.  Incorporate simple patterns, a variety of textures, and accessories to complete the look as a whole. But again, please do not have everyone in the exact same thing.

Make Sure Everyone is Warm Enough

I can’t say it enough. Layers, layers, and more layers.  Our fall days are either 80 and super sunny or 40 and rainy.  We never know what a Michigan fall day will be like, so instead of hoping for the best, let’s plan for the weather.  I know the dress you picked out for your daughter is adorable, but let’s make sure she has a jacket that pairs well with it and leggings, just in case. That button-down you have picked out for your son works great within your color scheme, but do you have a sweater he can pop on over it if it gets chilly?  Nobody can predict the weather.  So, throw a few extra layers into the car rather than being caught off guard.

Picking out wardrobes doesn’t not, under any circumstances, have to be as stressful as it’s made out to be.  You know what you’re most comfortably confident in. You know what works best for your family.  The hardest part is figuring out what colors to shop in.  For now, take advantage of the beautiful pallet that fall gives us!  Like I said earlier, I’m here to help you decide and to be an extra set of eyes if you need me!
