What to Wear to a Documentary Family Photo Session

Don't stress about what to wear during your family photo session with Katherine K. Cagle Photography.

Helpful tips on determining what to wear for your family session

I know what you’re thinking; “What in the world is a documentary family photo session?”  “How is this different from the family session we normally have?”  You have questions, and I get it!

A documentary family photo session is inspired by photojournalism.  Rather than pose and stage your family for photos, I simply am a (not so subtle) fly on the wall observing you and your family.  I do not pose, I do not interfere, and I do not alter the situation in any way.

Your documentary photo session is usually done in your home or during a family outing, and you plan how you want your time to go.

Sometimes that is baking cookies, and sometimes that is just jammies and snuggles.  This time is yours, and I am simply there to preserve the memories.

Determining what to wear to these sessions can sometimes be challenging if you don’t have an activity planned.  This blog is here to help you determine what to wear, regardless of if you have an activity planned or not…ready for my helpful tips?

Whatever you want.

That’s it, wear whatever you want. This is your family in your most authentic element.  Wear what you normally wear at home, and adjust accordingly if you have an activity planned. For example, if you’re baking, throw on an apron if you feel like it.

Wear whatever you want.

While your outfits are usually a significant decision to make for your lifestyle photography session, they are the least amount of your worries for your documentary photo session.  Embrace this time. Embrace this opportunity to be with your family, and embrace this moment with your family.
