Ways to Prepare For Your Fall Family Photos

I don’t want to be the bearer of bad news, but you're a bit behind if you haven’t already scheduled your fall family session and picked out everyone’s outfits. Don’t panic!  I have four easy tips to help you prepare for your session after you schedule it!

What to Wear

Determining what to wear to your fall family photos is no easy task.  That’s why I’ve written a whole separate blog on the topic. You can check it out here! Don’t have that much time? Here’s the condensed version: layers, coordinate over matching, and incorporate fall colors.

Muddy

One thing we can count on for a Michigan fall is that it will be muddy. Not the cute muddy, but the “How deep is this actually going to go?” muddy.  As a result, we all need to keep in mind a few things when it comes to family photos.

First, white or light colors may not be the best option. Stick with darker fall colors that would hide some mud if needed.  Secondly, plan a backup outfit as a just in case.  Some things just can’t be avoided…like an accidental face plant into a puddle. Finally, make sure everyone has good shoes to walk in, and we aren’t going to be heartbroken if they get a little dirty.

The day of

It’s finally the day of your session! You have successfully tested out all of the outfits, taken care of haircuts, chatted with your kids about being photographed by a friend, and answered any questions that they may have. The more your family knows, the more comfortable they will be with everything once the session actually begins.

As you prepare for your session, especially if you have an evening session, ensure everyone is fed. Pack snacks that won’t leave stains (dried fruit or granola are great options) and some water (juices also leave stains). It’s also not a bad idea to wait until you get out of the car to dress your little ones. Once you’ve got everyone in the car, turn up some jams, dance it out on your way to the session, and get ready to have some fun!

Friends, I know that trying to get all your ducks in a row for session day can be overwhelming.  I don’t want you to feel any stress on your session day whatsoever, and I hope that these few tips will help you prepare.

As we get closer to fall, if you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to reach out!  I’m here to answer whatever questions you have!  Click the link below, and let's chat!
