What to Ask Your Maternity Photographer

Important questions to ask before you book your maternity session.

Do you have a client closet?

Each photographer addresses this differently.  Some photographers have a client closet that could clothe the entire family.  Mom, dad, and kids of all ages can be clothed in their client closet. Some photographers only focus on mama but have style guides readily available for the rest of the family.

Finally, some photographers do not have a client closet but have style guides or use Style Select to help you determine what to wear.  Make sure you are aware of which photographer you have before your actual session! I, personally, do not have a client closet.

Do you bundle maternity and newborn sessions?

Just like with a client closet, each photographer makes this their own.  Some photographers will offer a discount on newborn sessions if you book both a maternity and newborn session with them.  Others will charge full session fees for both but offer a complementary announcement session for booking both.  Regardless of what your photographer offers, make sure you understand where the discount is if one is offered.

I do offer a bundle! Just ask for additional pricing information.

Do you allow props?

What is a prop, you ask?  Well, the simple answer is anything you bring to a session that isn’t you.  The onesie, the sonogram picture, the garland, and the confetti cannon are all examples of props, and this is a great question to ask before you buy or bring anything! Chances are, if your photographer does allow props, they already have several on hand.  While you may be responsible for bringing the more personal items (sono picture, personalized onesie, etc.), they might have everything else (garland, we’re expecting signs, etc.).  For the photographers who do not have/allow props, I would ask what they feel comfortable including.  Confetti cannon, no.  Sono picture, yes.

While I do not bring any props to use during your session, I will do my best to incorporate the items you choose to bring.  I ask that you let me know ahead of time what those will be.

When is the best time for my session?

This is such a good question!  So good, I have already written a blog about it!  Check it out here! Booking Your Maternity Session

What happens next?

So you have had your photo session! Does your photographer send you a sneak peek?  How long until the full gallery is delivered?  Are you able to order prints and other products?  These are all great questions to ask your photographer if they haven’t already told you about their post process.  While this may come in the form of an email or blog when you sign up for your session, make sure you understand the process and ask any other additional questions that you may have!
