Three Questions to Ask Your Newborn Photographer
As a first-time mom, I had more questions than answers. I wasn’t sure what I needed to do even to have this child, let alone what to do with a newborn when they got here! I knew I wanted pictures taken, but that’s about all I knew. To make sure that you weren’t as lost as I was, here are three questions to ask your newborn photographer to help prepare you for your session!
Do you use props to pose your newborns, or are newborns posed naturally?
This question is huge! Not all newborn photography is the same, and knowing what you want will help you find the perfect photographer for your newborn session! When posed naturally, your newborn will be placed in positions that are most natural to them in a safe space. When props are used, your newborn will be placed on a bean bag with materials underneath to support them.
I am in the school of thought that the baby is happiest and safest in your arms. I pose minimally and naturally. Not sure which is best for you and your newborn? Check out my newborn safety blog “Why Newborn Safety is Important.” These are two completely different looks. It’s important to ask beforehand to ensure your session is what you want it to be!
Will this session take place in a studio or at my home?
Each photographer has their own preference when it comes to your session location. Some will request that you come to the studio. They will have a few different setups, wraps, and accessories here. If you didn’t already before the session, you may have the option to pick which of these you would like to use.
I prefer to come to you. I only use props that you have available. Such as swaddles, or important blankets or outfits. The main setup is usually your bed or couch. Wherever there is the best light. If you have a choice between the two, choose where you think you and your baby will be most comfortable!
How do you suggest we prepare for our session?
While the other questions may seem more basic, this question has more meat to it. There are so many things to consider with a newborn session, and it is helpful if you’re aware of them all…even better if it’s before baby is earthside.
Here are some things to keep an eye out for. Should they be fed before their session? Should they be asleep when the session begins? How will a feeding work during a session? If your session is at home, where will most of the session occur? How long can you expect the session to last (meaning, how many changes of clothes and diapers should you pack if going to a studio?) Are sentimental props included?
See what I mean? There is a ton to think about before the first picture has even been taken! Making sure you, your family, and your newborn are prepared is a HUGE priority!
Friends, I 100% understand all that goes with preparing for a newborn, and planning your newborn sessions shouldn’t be another hassle!
